The support is provided for three years given the fulfillment of the basic promotion requirements, and the participants with superior performance will receive further support until 2012. Universities will be able to use the government subsidy to the employment of in-house admissions dean and specialized staffs, establishment of the admissions system, and management and operation of the admissions dean system. <span lang=EN-US style=\\\'font-size:10.0pt;font-family: Verdana;mso-fareast-font-family:굴림;color:windowtext\\\'> The school plans to open the Admissions Dean’s Office within the Admissions Office and hire the Admissions Dean, specialized staffs, and interviewers. Director Seok-cheol Yim of the Admissions Office stated, “The Admissions Dean’s Office will be placed within the Admissions Office, but the autonomy of the Dean and specialized staffs will be guaranteed.” The task proposal for the Admissions Officer System will be prepared by the October and put to practice starting for the 2010 admission. <span lang=EN-US style=\\\'font-size:10.0pt;font-family: Verdana;color:windowtext\\\'> The Admissions Officer System is designed to select creative talents with superb problem-solving ability based on the comprehensive assessment of academic performance, personal background and character, and potential. Matters to be done by colleges interested in their internationalization - Presentation made at APAIE by the team led by Professor Do-yeong Kim What do Korean students studying in Europe need more than anything else? It appears that the answer to this question is “a proactive mindset and open-mindedness.” For foreigner students studying in Korea, “knowledge about local cultures” appears what they need the most.The foregoing is part of the contents of the presentation made by a team led by Professor Kim Do-yeong (School of Business Administration) with the help of Chang Dae-sung (a graduate student/School of Business Administration) at a session of the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) held in March in Japan based on a survey toward 84 Ajou students studying in Europe, North America and Oceania and 99 foreign students studying at Ajou as part of the sister school student exchange program.The survey, which was carried out on three occasions, i.e. right after their arrival, two months later and four months later, checked the students’ level of assimilation to local cultures, human interactions, satisfaction with life in a foreign country plus desired roles of the home university and the host university in connection with the foregoing.Ajou students with a proactive mindset studying in foreign countries showed a positive result in terms of assimilation to local cultures. Commenting on the survey, Professor Kim Do-yeong and Mr. Chang Dae-sung said, “The survey shows how their individual personality has an impact on their need to adapt to cultures of foreign countries where individualism is respected.” In contrast, the survey shows that foreigner students studying at Ajou rarely see that their individual personality has a significant impact on their life in Korea, a collectivist society, and that they get assimilated to local cultures rapidly, as time goes by. The research team commented on it, saying, “It appears that as foreigner students here come to have a deeper understanding of local cultures, as they have more and more close Korean friends.” The research proposes that it is necessary for Korean students who intend to study in these foreign countries to pay attention to the fact that their own behavior toward others will have a strong impact on their life there amid strong individualism. As for foreigner students studying at Ajou, the research says that it is necessary for them to understand local cultures, particularly the strong collectivism of Koreans to have a higher level of satisfaction with their life here. The research also points to the need for colleges in the said foreign countries to provide programs designed to help Korean students there to be able to adapt to their individualistic cultures, and vice versa. The research says, “Overall, both Korean and foreigner exchange students express much higher satisfaction with their life in foreign countries than in the past. Needless to say, their level of satisfaction will become higher with the launch of the aforesaid programs.” Man-Ghyu Pak, Head of the Office of External Relations, said, “The research was carried out, as it was pointed out that it was necessary to overhaul the student exchange program. I agree that we should make efforts to enhance the quality of the program, rather than focusing on increasing the number of exchange students. Attendees at the APAIE session expressed much interest in the contents of the presentation concerning the need for internationalization of colleges.” <Prof. Kim made a presentation at a session of the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE)> Ajou University

NEIP Grabs First Prize at the World Student Technology Competition - NEIP\'s Short Film Won First Prize at the Imagine Cup 2008 - GOMZ Won Third Prize in the Game Sector Korea\'s NEIP team (digital media majors including Ahn Seong-Ran, Jeong Il-Jin, Chu Yeon-Jun, and Yi Seong-Wuk) and the GOMZ team (information and computer engineering major Kim Dong-Hun as a member ) won the first and the third prizes at the "Imagine Cup 2008. At the world student technology competition, the "Imagine Cup 2008," held in Paris, France, the Korean NEIP team won the first prize in short film by beating both the Mexican and Canadian teams. The GONZ team, which competed in the game development sector, was ranked third following the Brazilian and Belgian teams. While one of the Korean teams advanced to the final and won the second prize last year, four Korean teams competed in the finals in four sections and two of them won prizes this year. With "Imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable environment" as its topic, this year\'s competition selected winners by evaluating the uniqueness, innovativeness, potential for further development, and presentation of the project of each team. The team NEIP advanced to the final with "The Red Cloak," a short film about a boy anxiously waiting for a superman who will eliminate air pollution. As the finalists were supposed to shoot, edit, and finish a work on a new topic within 36 hours, the NEIP comically depicted the process of recycling cans and its significance in its work "Can" and won the first prize. According to the judges, the work was "eco-friendly and unique in its idea." The GOMZ team, which won the third prize in the game development section that was added this year for the first time, showed off its work, which features a touch of Korean elements. The film"Cleanup," is an action game in which humans, who left the polluted earth for outer space and purified the environment of a cube, which is as polluted as the earth using clean guns. Started on July 3 this year, the "Imagine Cup" is a student technology competition created by Microsoft in 2003. Opened to all 16 year-olds or older students around the world, the competition this year had some 208,000 students participating from 120 countries, among whom some 370 students from 61 countries competed in the finals. Professor Han Man-yeop awarded Republic of Korea Technology Silver Grand Prize - For the second time this year, unique in civil engineering field The IPC (Innovative Pre-stressed Support) Earth Retention System developed in 2003 by Professor Han Man-yeop (Department of Environment, Construction and Transportation Engineering) was designated as one of the Top 10 New Technologies of the Republic of Korea in 2007, and Supportec, Ltd., which commercialized this technology, was awarded the Republic of Korea Technology Silver Grand Prize 2007. The IPS method developed by Professor Han is a temporary installation method for supporting the retaining wall to construct the subsurface structure after ground excavation in civil engineering and building structure construction projects. This method will shorten the construction period as well as reduce construction costs and materials. The IPS method was designated as New Technology (No. 433) by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation and New Technology (No. K054) by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Also, it was awarded the 28th week Jang Yeong-sil Prize in 2007. As of now, the patent has been registered in the U. S. A. and Japan. The Republic of Korea Technology Grand Prize sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Engineering and managed by the Korea Industrial Technology Foundation is a technology award started in 1999 and of the greatest scale in this country. Professor Han had his “PSC I-type Girder Technology by Stepwise Introduction of Tensile Force” designated as one of the Top 10 New Technologies of the Republic of Korea in 2000 as well. Only these two technologies, developed by Professor Han, have ever been designated in the civil engineering field. Ajou University

Ajou courses win ABEEK preliminary certification All the courses that submitted applications (i.e. ten courses of the College of Engineering and two courses of the College of Information Technology (Please see the following for the list.) obtained preliminary certifications from the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK)Ajou University Engineering Education Innovation Center Director Kim Gong-hwan said, "Korea became a full member of the Washing Accord in June 2007. Thus, conditions for the ABEEK certification have been made the more rigorous. From this year on, the eight conditions should all be satisfied for the preliminary certification. Until last year, applicants had only to meet six out of the eight conditions, i.e. educational objective for the course, learning performance and evaluation for the course, curriculum category, students, faculty, educational environment, improvement in education, certification standards for major areas. The certification of all the courses shows the sheer quality of educational courses of this school."A total of 19 universities, including Ajou, applied for the certification. Our school plans to submit a self evaluation report to the ABEEK by January 2009, the ABEEK is scheduled to pay a visit to our school in May 2009 for first-hand appraisal and the results of the main certification will be known by January 2010.ABEEK is a system of quality guarantee concerning an engineering education course. The certification means that students who have finished the relevant course are equipped with the internationally competitive working-level engineering capability. As Korea has become a member of the Washington Accord, graduates of the ABEEK-certified courses are eligible for apply for professional engineer examinations carried out in the U.S., the U.K, Australia and Canada and are treated equally with graduates of local universities at workplaces in more industrialized countries. * The ten courses of the College of Engineering: Mechanical Engineering, Industrial & Information Systems Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material & Science Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Biotechnology, Environmental Engineering, Construction System Engineering, Transportation System Engineering and Architectural Engineering.
