World-OKTA and Ajou agree to run the Global Startup Academy 2016-02-19 On February 16th, Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim, Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, and other officials attended the opening ceremony for the World-OKTA Global Business Center and discussed bilateral exchanges and cooperation with World-OKTA (World Federation of Overseas Korean Traders Associations). World-OKTA established the Center as a launch pad that helps small- and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) enter and build presence in overseas markets and assists young people to start businesses and find jobs abroad. The Center is located in KINTEX in Goyang City, Gyeonggi-do. World-OKTA was established in 1981 as an association of economic and trade activities for Korean businesspeople based in different countries around the globe. World-OKTA Chairman Ki Chool Park said, "The World-OKTA Global Business Center will serve as a mecca where young Koreans at home and abroad can join hands to start businesses in the global market and will become a reliable platform for small and medium exporters to advance into overseas markets," adding, "We will use half of the nearly 500 square meters of the Center as a business startup support center for young people and work together with Ajou on the program design and operation." Ajou has steadily pursued various exchanges and cooperation with World-OKTA. In particular, the two sides agreed to run the 'World-OKTA & Ajou University Global Startup Academy' within the Center. The Academy will assist young Koreans at home and abroad in starting businesses and support companies run by overseas Koreans, etc. Regarding the Academy, the University plans to support World-OKTA by actively utilizing its know-how from operating internship and corporate support programs. In his congratulatory message, President Kim said, "I expect that the Global Business Center will play a significant role amid the challenging economic environment," adding, "Ajou will be actively involved in operating the 'World-OKTA & Ajou University Global Startup Academy' as a partner." The two sides agreed to continue the 'OKTA Internship Program,' which began last year, and prepare the '2016 Korea Tour and Local Training for the World-OKTA Next Generation Trade School' as they continue to discuss the program details. The Next Generation Trade School is a program that World-OKTA has been running for overseas Koreans to foster the next generation of economic leaders.

Ajou's team led by Professor Ju Min Kim develops an analysis device that prevents molecular damage 2016-02-18 An Ajou University team led by Professor Ju Min Kim (Department of Chemical Engineering, Graduate School's Department of Energy System Research) developed technology that can considerably improve the performance of animal cell culturing devices, which produce proteins, antibodies, or hormones, etc. Professor Kim said he teamed up with Professor Wook Ryol Hwang (School of Mechanical Engineering, Gyeongsang National University) to develop a fluidic device that can precisely adjust the size of gaseous bubbles formed within animal cell culturing devices. Yeong Bok Bae of Ajou's Graduate School participated in the research as the first author, and Professor Gwang Lee from Ajou's School of Medicine joined as a collaborator. Their findings were published as the cover paper in the first 2016 issue of The Lab on a Chip, a world-class academic journal published by the U.K.'s Royal Society of Chemistry. In order to raise the productivity of animal cell culturing devices, it is critical to create conditions that prevent molecular damage. It has been known that molecular damage is mainly caused by the stress generated from bursting oxygen bubbles that must be supplied in culturing cells. Professor Kim's team developed a molecular damage measuring device and an air bubble control device that work within molecular culturing equipment, along with a microfluidic mixer that can adjust the liquid flow. He then applied the devices to cell culturing equipment. Professor Kim said, "Cell culturing requires a steady supply of plenty of oxygen bubbles to the animal culturing equipment," adding, "However, intense stress occurs due to the bursting of oxygen bubbles when their diameters reach 5mm or less." Professor Kim went on to say, "In the research, we succeeded in identifying the maximum size of gaseous bubbles that do not cause molecular damage by measuring the critical stress of molecular damage. The finding will contribute to reducing molecular damage." If the efficiency of this technology improves further, it is expected to greatly contribute to enhancing the productivity of various medical products including artificial hearts. President Hun Many from the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia visits Ajou to discuss bilateral exchanges 2016-02-12 A delegation led by President Hun Many from the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC) visited Ajou University on February 5th to discuss types of bilateral exchanges. President Hun is the third son of Prime Minister Hun Sen and serving as the leader of UYFC, a representative association of Cambodia’s youth. It was established in 1978 to educate young people of the country and provides vocational training and education on health and leadership and conducts community service, etc. During their stay at Ajou, the delegation of President Hun had a meeting with students from the University and discussed support from the Cambodian government for young people to start businesses and various opportunities in and the potential of the Cambodian market, etc. The meeting was attended by students from Ajou's business startup club, Cambodian students attending the Graduate School of International Studies under the University, and those who will participate in the Global Business Developer program, which is operated by the Cambodian Office of the Korea Trade & Investment Promotion Agency to help young people start businesses and find jobs. The meeting was followed by a welcome luncheon hosted by Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim. Vice President for Student Affairs Jai Hyoung Cho and Vice President for External Relations Byung Chun So also joined the event. Ajou is selected as the Best Promotion University at the KUSF Awards 2016-02-05 Ajou University was selected as the Best Promotion University for its soccer team at the '2015 Korea University Sport Federation (KUSF) Awards.' The University took home the award in the category for the second straight year after winning it in 2014. Ajou received a plaque and prize money at the award ceremony, which was held on February 4th at the Renaissance Hotel Seoul during the 2016 KUSF General Assembly. In order to establish a sporting culture in which many Ajou people participate, the University is operating the soccer team support system, which involves professors, staff members, and students in a similar way to that of professional sports clubs, for the first time among Korean universities. On home game days, the soccer team arranges various events to encourage Ajou people to come out and watch and cheer the team on. On other days, it sells uniforms of its players or promotes upcoming matches at local markets, etc. Thanks to such activities, the University attracted 1,010 fans to the opening game and a combined 4,050 spectators throughout the 2015 U-League, which is more than any other university according to the official statistics compiled by the Korea Football Association. Unlike 2014, when KFA only collected data on university soccer teams, the rankings for 2015 are based on data on all the university sports in the country. This is expected to further boost the goal of Ajou's soccer team to be the leader of university sports culture. In other categories at the KUSF Awards, Mi Seon Choi from Kwangju Women's University’s archery team was chosen as the Excellent Academic Performance Student and Manager Sang Bok Lee from Dong Eui University's badminton team was selected as the Outstanding Leader.

Ajou holds the 2016 Vice President's Workshop for one night and two days 2016-02-03 Ajou University held the 2016 Vice President's Workshop for one night and two days (February 1st and 2nd) at the KB Ingenium located in Suwon. The Workshop was attended by President Dong Yeon Kim, Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, Dean of the Graduate School Joong Soon Jang, and all the vice presidents from the University. During the event, participants discussed and shared development directions of the University. For every issue, not only the responsible departments but team leaders and staff members who are interested joined discussions and presented a variety of ideas in a comfortable setting. Hence, there were heated debates on each and every topic, which made the discussions last longer than scheduled. The Workshop began with a presentation on a survey of Ajou's image, followed by discussions of 13 issues, including the Creative Activity Semester, a talent-fostering project tailored to social needs, strategies for improving university evaluation criteria, the remodeling of the University library, the campus master plan, fostering student employment, promoting research activities, the Ajourian Project, directions for the University's globalization, changes in admission policies, improving the scholarship system, Pleasant Innovation & mentoring programs, and inviting professors. In his evaluation to conclude the workshop, President Kim said, "We started the workshop with survey findings on the University's image, and I ask that we prepare for the future by clearly understanding Ajou's current status from objective viewpoints. He added, "We should constantly ask questions in our day-to-day work in order not to get lost in the work itself, but to remind ourselves of our goals and directions," emphasizing, "You should not be bound to existing practices." President Kim went on to say, "The workshop was very helpful in establishing plans and directions for the University's development by sharing various in-depth ideas among participants," requesting, "I ask that all the Ajou people continue to take interest in the general operation of the University from broader perspectives."

Gwanggyo Jungang (Ajou University) Station opens as part of the newly dedicated extension of the New Bundang Subway Line 2016-01-29 The extension of the New Bundang Subway Line (from Jeongja to Gwanggyo) begins service on January 30th. The extended segment includes Gwanggyo Jungang (Ajou University) Station, which is expected to greatly improve transportation convenience for Ajou people and visitors to the University. The extended section is 13.8 km long and includes Jeongja, Dongcheon, Suji-gu Office, Seongbok, Sanghyeon, Gwanggyo Jungang (Ajou University), and Gwanggyo (Kyonggi University) stations. It is connected to the existing New Bundang Line running from Gangnam to Jeongja and allows direct access to Pangyo, Cheonggyesan, Yangjae Citizen's Forest, Yangjae, and Gangnam stations. It takes about 37 minutes to travel between Gwanggyo and Gangnam, the stations on either end of the New Bundang Line. Operating hours for the New Bundang Subway Line are from 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. the next day (through midnight on weekends and national holidays), and the interval between trains is five minutes during rush hours and eight minutes for the other hours. Following the opening of Gwangyo Jungang (Ajou University) Station, Ajou plans to run commuting and shuttle buses between the Station and the University starting in late February. A ceremony, which was held on January 29th at Gwangyo Jungang (Ajou University) Station to dedicate the extended subway line, was attended by relevant officials, including Minister of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Ho In Kang, Gyeonggi Provincial Governor Kyung Pil Nam, Suwon City Mayor Tae Young Yeom, and Ajou President Dong Yeon Kim. Prior to the ceremony, there was an event for delivering plaques of appreciation in Ajou's Yulgok Hall. President Dong Yeon Kim presented plaques of appreciation to President Beom Jae Lee (entering class of 1973, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) of the General Alumni Association and alumnus Gwi Seok Oh (entering class of 1978, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Vice Principal of Maehyang Middle School) for their contributions to have the words "Ajou University" included in the official name "Gwanggyo Jungang Station." Ajou's students can design their own curricula under the Creative Activity Semester program 2016-01-28 The Creative Activity Semester, in which Ajou University students can design and carry out challenging tasks on their own and obtain regular credits, will kick off this spring semester. On January 28th, the Creative Activity Semester Operational Committee announced the review results of applications and executive plans for the Creative Activity Semester, approving the tasks submitted by a total of 39 teams consisting of 118 students. The University received the applications and plans from December 10th to January 17th and provided advice and consulting to help students design their programs. Participants in the Creative Activity Semester will carry out the tasks they designed and receive 3-18 regular credits if the tasks are successfully completed. While students should design programs on their own to apply for the Creative Activity Semester, it is also possible to choose or revise programs from among those suggested by the University or professors. There is no limitation of the areas in which students may design their tasks, i.e., the humanities, culture and arts, community services, globalization, and industry-academia cooperation. The minimum number of credits for application is three, and the 'Creative Activity Semester' is acknowledged for students who obtain nine or more credits during the semester. In addition, the University will endorse the 'Creative Activity Track' for students who receive 12 or more credits over multiple semesters and describe the detailed activities in their transcripts. Some of the tasks included in the Creative Activity Semester include: Designing and building cars to participate in domestic and overseas Formula racing for students; language and cultural exchanges with Chinese students through working as Korean language teachers; designing and building drones; providing services related to sign language and helping the deaf learn the language; making and submitting short films to international film festivals; and building financial prediction programs by using data-mining skills. Participants should submit interim and final reports, and guiding professors or experts from outside the University will serve as advisors to the students. In addition, up to 300,000 won in scholarships will be provided per three credits based on the expenses students requested in their applications. President Dong Yeon Kim said, "The Creative Activity Semester was introduced to encourage students to find and accomplish what they really want to do," adding, "I ask that students 'live lives for themselves, rather than having them designed by others' by taking on various challenges in different fields." Ajou's President discusses avenues for cooperation with corporate representatives from South Korea during his visit to China 2016-01-26 During his visit to China from January 20th to the 23rd, Ajou University's President Dong Yeon Kim discussed avenues for cooperation between the University and corporations at meetings with members of the World-OKTA Beijing and Shanghai branches, and other South Korean corporate representatives based in Shanghai. The World-OKTA (World Federation of Overseas Korean Traders Associations, hereinafter "OKTA") was established in 1981 as an association of economic and trade activities for Korean businesspeople based in different countries around the globe. It currently has 137 branches in 70 countries. Ajou has been developing a steady partnership with OKTA, including the 'OKTA Internship Program' and the 'Ajou-World OKTA Bridge Project for Corporate Support in Connection with On-site Student Training, which the University began last year. President Kim met with Korean businesspeople from OKTA's Beijing Branch on the 21st, and those from OKTA's Shanghai Branch on the 22nd. The businesspeople in Beijing introduced the business start-up idea contest for Korean and Chinese college students, and said that they would provide full support for Ajou's students to find jobs and start businesses in China. OKTA's Shanghai Branch invited President Kim as a lecturer to the education program for its next generation members, which is scheduled for the coming June. The following meeting with corporate representatives based in Shanghai was attended by ten people, including Director Min Ho Lee from KOTRA (Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency), Director Jae Hong Lee from Export-Import Bank of Korea, Branch Head Tae Sun Kim from Samsung C&T, and Eun Mo Park from CJ, and President Kim and other officials from the University. During the meeting, President Kim introduced programs that Ajou is pursuing, and the representatives from different organizations, including KOTRA, said that they would positively consider participating in the internship program for the University students. Other events during President Kim's stay in China included a luncheon at the invitation of the Republic of Korea Ambassador to China Jang Soo Kim (former Director of the National Security Office) and another luncheon at the invitation of Consul General to Shanghai Seok Hee Han. Ajou signs MOUs with China's Beijing Institute of Technology and Shanghai Jiao Tong University 2016-01-26 Ajou University signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with China's Beijing Institute of Technology and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, respectively. Based on the MOUs, Ajou plans to conduct active exchanges and cooperation between the two universities, including dispatching students and professors to China. Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim visited Beijing, China, on January 20th to conclude the MOU with the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT). President Kim and BIT's President Hu Hai Yan signed and exchanged the MOU, which deals with avenues for exchange and cooperation in education and research, etc. between the two universities. BIT, which was established in 1940 by the Communist Party of China, is the first university in the field of engineering and natural sciences in the country. Eighteen students from Ajou, including three from other universities, are participating in the "After You Program" at the BIT during this winter. The Program was launched by Ajou for students who find it hard to develop overseas experience because of financial difficulties, and the program for this winter is the second one following the first program that was held last summer at the University of Michigan and Johns Hopkins University in the U.S. and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. During the four-week program, the participants are attending the Chinese language course and having cultural experiences, etc. The MOU with the BIT includes exchanges between students and faculty members, etc. During the MOU signing ceremony, President Kim proposed a dual degree program between the two universities, and the BIT welcomed it. The two sides will soon begin discussions on details for introducing the dual degree program, including the selection of applied departments and exchanging the relevant curricula. President Kim then visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) located in Shanghai on the 21st, and concluded two MOUs. Established in 1896, SJTU is a prestigious university, ranking 5th among Chinese universities and 24th among Asian universities in the 2015 QS Worldwide University Rankings. In 2007, Ajou and SJTU signed an MOU on exchange and cooperation, and entered into two additional MOUs to further deepen and expand their bilateral cooperation during the latest visit. Ajou's President Kim and SJTU's Vice President Huang Zhen signed an MOU on the After You Program, and Ajou's Vice President for External Relations Byung Chun So and Director Guk Bong Lee from SJTU's Center for Korean Studies concluded an MOU between Ajou University Unification Institute and SJTU's Institute of Unification, respectively. President Kim's visit to China also included a dinner with the "After You Program" participants and another dinner at the invitation of Ajou's General Alumni Association based in Shanghai. President Kim told the Program participants, "I hope that the 'After You Program' will be an opportunity for you to gain insight on a different region of the globe," encouraging, "I ask you to productively complete it and return home safely." What was interesting about the dinner at the BIT is the fact that its staff members prepared food themselves. In China, it is a sign of special welcome for the host to make and serve food to guests in person. Keysight Technologies donates semi-conductor design software worth 1.6 billion won to Ajou 2016-01-21 Keysight Technologies Korea, which manufactures electronic test and measurement equipment, donated two sets of semi-conductor design automation software to the College of Information Technology at Ajou University. The software is for device-modeling simulation and worth 1.6 billion won. The donation ceremony, which was held on January 18th in Ajou's Yulgok Hall, was attended by CEO Deok Gwon Yoon, Vice President Gang Hyeon Lee, Executive Director Dong Hee Kim, Director Gyeong Ho Kim, and Manager Gwon Il Kim from Keysight Technologies Korea. Also in attendance from the University were President Dong Yeon Kim, Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, and Professor Sang Bae Kim and Director Chae Woo Lee from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The donation was first proposed by Vice President Lee from Keysight Technologies (entering class of 1975, Ajou's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) when he learned about semi-conductor education at the University. The device-modeling simulation software (IC-CAP, MBP, and MQA) donated by Keysight Technologies Korea is automation software for engineers who create models of semi-conductor devices. The software will allow Ajou students in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering under the College of Information Technology to experiment with and practice the entire process related to semi-conductor design first-hand. CEO Yoon from Keysight Technologies Korea said, "I hope that our software donation will not only help the University students improve their practical capabilities, but also contribute to the development of semi-conductor design in South Korea," adding, "We will continue to cooperate with Ajou in the future." President Dong Yeon Kim gave his words of appreciation by saying, "The software donated by Keysight Technologies, which is a leader in electronic test and measurement equipment, will definitely enhance the quality of experiments at Ajou's College of Information Technology." Among the donated software, IC-CAP (Integrated Circuit Characterization and Analysis Program) is used in modeling for many types of equipment including high-tech semi-conductor foundries and is for measurement control and parameter extraction. MBP (Model Builder Program) is a one-stop solution that provides both automation and flexibility for semi-conductor device modeling, and it allows for model parameter extraction based on the complex modeling selected by users. MQA (Model Quality Assurance) is a tool for the verification and automation of SPICE models. As a global maker specializing in electronic test and measurement equipment, Keysight Technologies is based in California, U.S., and serves the communications, computer, semi-conductor, aerospace, and defense industries.

Ajou is selected as an operator of the Technology Development Project through Cooperation among Industry, Academia, and Research Institutes2016-01-15Ajou University was selected as an operator of the "2016 Technology Development Project through Cooperation among Industry, Academia, and Research Institutes," which is being carried out by the Small and Medium Business Administration and the Korea Technology and Information Promotion Agency for SMEs.The Project aims to encourage the operators – universities and research institutes – to cooperate with Small and Mid-sized Enterprises (SMEs), which are weak in technological expertise, to transfer their R&D-related technologies and improve the SMEs' technological innovation capabilities by jointly developing technologies.Ajou was selected as a Project operator because of the positive evaluation of the customized R&D infrastructure that it has built to meet corporate demands. The University plans to have its Industry-Academia Cooperation Center for SMEs under the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation take charge of the Project, with the Technology Transfer Center, the Corporate Support Center, and the Business Incubation Center also participating. By doing so, it intends to establish a system that can create synergy in developing a number of major technologies and fostering technological commercialization via cooperation among industry, academia, and research institutes. In addition, the latest selection will be an opportunity to make sustainable achievements in connection with the LINC Project.This year, the University is set to receive a total of about 800 million won and carry out two assignments under the 'First Step Tasks,' which is the category for companies participating in national R&D projects for the first time, and another six assignments under the 'Take-off Tasks' for those with stagnant technological capabilities regardless of their history in national R&D projects.Director Joong Soon Jang of the Industry-Academia Cooperation Center for SMEs (Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering) said, "The University's selection for the Project has expanded the foundation for the joint development of innovative technologies and their commercialization, which will help establish win-win relationships with local industries," adding, "We will make great contributions to the growth of the local economy by reinforcing collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutes."
