Ajou signs an agreement with the Korea Rural Community Corporation on technical exchanges for promoting drone usage 2016-03-28 At 10 a.m. on March 28th, Ajou University held a ceremony in Yulgok Hall's Conference Room 1 to sign an agreement with the Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC) on technical exchanges to promote drone use in agriculture and fisheries and other related areas in farming and fishing communities. Under the agreement, the two institutions will carry out research and develop related technologies on drone use in agriculture and fisheries, and farming and fishing communities, jointly use respective assets and share related technologies and information that are necessary for research, and conduct regular activities for technical exchanges in R&D, including academic studies, seminars, and symposiums. In addition, they will establish the Drone Development & Test Center to work together for studying and developing drones. KRC CEO Sang Mu Lee said, "This agreement will combine Ajou's technical expertise and KRC's know-how in studying various technologies that can be used in farming and fishing communities. Such activities are also expected to contribute to the Creative Economy." Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim said, "Drone-related business is one of the areas where the University has priority and Ajou people have lots of interest. I expect that this agreement will bring together our two institutions to create synergy effects regarding drone usage in agriculture and fisheries and other areas related to farming and fishing communities."

Ajou signs an agreement on R&D education with the Korea Institute of Human Resources Development in Science and Technology 2016-03-25 Ajou University signed an agreement on operating R&D education programs at universities with the Korea Institute of Human Resources Development in Science and Technology (KIRD. Chairman Yong Seop Ryu) on the morning of March 25th in Yulgok Hall. Under the agreement, the two institutions will establish the cooperative system necessary for R&D education and share faculty members, education facilities, and education content, etc. In particular, the 'R&D Education Program for Ajou University,' a tailored course for Ajou's graduate students in master's and doctoral courses, is scheduled to begin in March. The Program will cover research ethics, research notes, and research and thesis writing in English, etc. President Dong Yeon Kim said, "The high-quality educational content provided by KIRD is expected to significantly improve the R&D abilities of Ajou's graduate students in natural sciences and engineering majors. These students will lead the development of science and technology in the future." Chairman Ryu from KIRD said, "I will strive to make our partnership an exemplary case. I also hope that KIRD will be able to expand cooperation with Ajou into other fields." President Dong Yeon Kim delivered orders and certificates of award on behalf of President Geun Hye Park. Three professors – Professor Dong Pyo Ju (Department of Chemical Engineering), Professor Tae Young Choi (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering), and Professor Soo Ghee Oh (Department of Physics) – retired in February 2016. Professor Ju was appointed as a professor in 1979, and Professor Choi and Professor Oh began their service at the University in 1983. The three retiring professors received the Order of Service Merit (Green Stripes) in recognition of having spent 36 years in public service, including military service and teaching experience at other institutions. According to the government standards for the presentation of awards, faculty members who have served for at least 33 years can receive the Order of Service Merit, and the Green Stripes are the fourth-highest grade after Blue, Yellow, and Red Stripes. President Kim, Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, other vice presidents, and officials from Faculty Affairs Team of the University attended the ceremony to congratulate the retiring professors on their receiving the awards. President Kim commended their contributions to Ajou as he treated them to lunch, remarking, "I look forward to your continued service in the future as honorary professors for the development of the University."

Ajou is selected as the Unification Education Leading University by the Ministry of Unification 2016-03-22 Ajou University was selected as the 'Unification Education Leading University' by the Ministry of Unification. Through the project, the Ministry aims to promote unification education at universities by developing unification education models and expanding related subjects, etc. On March 18th, the Ministry of Unification said that it chose six universities as 'Unification Education Leading Universities,' including Ajou, Seoul National University, Soongsil University, Chungnam National University, Kyungnam University, Gwangju National University of Education. Thirty-one four-year universities applied for the project, which was introduced this year. The selection was based on written evaluations and interviews, and a total of 1.8 billion won will be provided to the six universities that were chosen. Having been selected for the project, the University plans to run the 'Ajou Unification Education Program,' which aims to foster talents with practical expertise in unification by providing experience-oriented unification education based on revamped liberal arts and major subjects. The University is also preparing programs to facilitate unification-related community services and study clubs run by students and support exchanges between students and youth who fled from North Korea to the South. Other programs include online lectures on unification and various other special lectures, which will help the citizens and local governments prepare for the unification era, as well as students. Last December, the University opened the Unification Institute and held the "2015 Conference on the Unification of the Koreas - From Humanitarian Support to Cooperation for Development" in partnership with the Gyeonggi Provincial Government.

Two students are selected for the Ajou-Suwon Scholarship master's degree Program 2016-03-21 The 2016 scholarship award ceremony was held on March 15th in Yulgok Hall's Video Conference Room at Ajou University for the Ajou-Suwon Scholarship master’s degree Program (ASSP), which is operated by the Graduate School of International Studies under the University and the Suwon Center for International Cooperation (SWCIC). ASSP was launched in 2014 by the Suwon Municipal Government to improve the competitiveness of the city and develop the infrastructure for international exchanges by attracting excellent talents from its sixteen sister and friendly cities in 13 countries. During the event, Pham Minh Hang from Hai Duong Province, Vietnam and Benaissa Lamiae from Fez, Morocco were selected as scholarship students based on the recommendation from Suwon's sister cities. The selection raised the number of those benefiting from ASSP to five. Starting from this year, scholarship funds for the students cover all the expenses, including tuition fees, boarding fees, and part of their living expenses for up to two years of the master's course, which amounts to 15 million won per year. Until last year, the scholarships funded half the tuition fees only. After receiving the certificate of scholarship, Pham Minh Hang (Department of International Trade, Graduate School of International Studies) said, "I am so excited to be able to study with the scholarships provided by our sister city, Suwon. Upon receiving my master's degree, I will take the lead in promoting Ajou University in Vietnam and expanding exchanges between Suwon City and Hai Duong Province." Dean Jay Ick Lim of the Graduate School of International Studies said, "ASSP is in its third year with the partnership with Suwon City and I expect the program for attracting excellent foreign students to grow further and benefit even more students." SWCIC Chief Man Ho Noh said, "We will continue the scholarship program in partnership with universities in Suwon, so that it can bring more outstanding foreign talents to the city." The scholarship award ceremony was attended by about ten relevant officials, including Dean Jay Ick Lim, and Chief Man Ho Noh and team leader Jae Myeong Ha from SWCIC.

Ajou's first Brown Bag Meeting is held for the spring semester 2016-03-15 The first Brown Bag Meeting for the spring semester of the 2016 academic year was held at noon on March 15th in Conference Room 1 of Ajou's Yulgok Hall. Eighteen students who were selected based on prior applications talked with President Dong Yeon Kim over sandwiches and beverages for about two hours. Students asked questions about Paran Semester – Ajou's Creative Activity Program, other major programs offered by the University including the new scholarship system, some of the challenges President Kim faced and how he addressed them, and how to read books effectively, etc. President Kim said, "You should prepare for possible challenges when you are in favorable and comfortable times, instead of remaining complacent ," advising, "You can succeed when you throw yourselves into tough situations." He went on to say, "I expect students to experience failures and trials and errors through programs like Paran Semester," adding, "The University will actively support your challenges." He also introduced the University’s programs to help students find jobs and start businesses abroad and asked students to make the most of such programs when they take on challenges. The Brown Bag Meeting with the President will take place during lunch time on the first and third Wednesday of each month. Participants will engage in dialogue on any topics they would like, rather than setting ones in advance. About 20 students will be invited to each Brown Bag Meeting based on prior applications made via the University website. Participants will be selected in the order of their applications, and those who are not chosen will be given priority for the following sessions. ‘Brown Bag Meeting’ means a small number of people talking over lunch, and the term was created because the sandwiches or salads, etc. eaten for lunch usually come in brown bags.

During the event, Professor Tae Young Choi (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Professor Kee Choo Choi (Department of Transportation System Engineering) and CEO Jae Joon Kim of Miraecom received plaques. The ceremony was attended by President Dong Yeon Kim, Dean Kun Mo Lee of the Graduate School of Engineering, Vice President for Planning Jung Seob Lee, and Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Chae Woo Lee from the University. President Kim delivered the plaques of appreciation and flower bouquets to the donors to express his gratitude. Professor Tae Young Choi donated 20 million won in development funds to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Professor Kee Choo Choi donated 20 million won, which is being used as scholarship funds for students under the name 'Choi Kee Choo Scholarships.' Ajou holds the award ceremony for the ‘Kang Nae Seong Awards for Excellent Papers’ 2016-03-14 The award ceremony for the ‘Kang Nae Seong Awards for Excellent Papers’ was held on the morning of March 14th in Yulgok Hall at Ajou University. The Awards were created to encourage research activities of the graduate students who release excellent papers based on financial contributions made by Chairman Nae Seong Kang of Sewon EPC. The event was attended by Chairman Kang, four winners of the Awards, President Dong Yeon Kim, Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, Dean Joong Soon Jang of the Graduate School, Dean Bong Heui Han of the School of Business Administration, Vice President for Planning Jung Seob Lee, Vice President for Administration Jay Ick Lim, and other officials from the University. The honor of receiving the Awards went to Byeong Dong Kang (combined master's and doctorate program, Department of Mechanical Engineering), Myeong Hwan Eom (doctorate program, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering), Cheon Hee Park (doctorate program, Department of Public Administration), and Chang Hee Lee (doctorate program, Department of Business Administration). Each of them was given 2.5 million won in scholarship funds, which were raised from Chairman Kang's contributions. Chairman Kang donated 100 million won to the University in 2013 and has contributed an additional 5 million won per year for graduate students who produce outstanding performances. Since starting his career as a researcher at the then Sunkyung Industry in 1981, Chairman Kang has become an expert in the field of EP (Engineering Plastic) and submitted over ten relevant patent applications over the last two decades. He founded Sewon EPC in 1999 based on his expertise. Chairman Kang's donation to Ajou began after he recovered from an unexpected traffic accident, thanks to the treatment from Professor Wook Hwan Kim (Department of Orthopedic Surgery) at the University Hospital. In 2013, he contributed 100 million won to the University Development Fund and 5 million won to support research activities when he finished the Advanced Management Program at Ajou's Graduate School of Business Administration. Byeong Dong Kang, one of the students who received the Award, published his paper entitled "Numerical Study on Energy Harvesting from Concentration Gradient by Reverse Electrodialysis in Anodic Alumina Nanopores" in The Energy, an academic journal listed in the Science Citation Index (SCI). Myeong Hwan Eom also published his paper in The IEEE Transactions on Robotics, another SCI-listed journal, which is entitled "Robust Swing-Up and Balancing Control Using a Nonlinear Disturbance Observer for the Pendubot System with Dynamic Friction." Cheon Hee Park and Chang Hee Lee contributed their papers to The Korean Journal of Public Administration and The Journal of the Korea Academia-Industrial Cooperation Society, respectively. Park's paper is entitled "The Role of Knowledge in Acceptance of Nuclear Power: A Focus on Objective and Subjective Knowledge" and Lee's paper is entitled "The Effect of Self-measurement Frequency Levels on SmartCare Obesity Management." As a token of gratitude for Chairman Kang, President Kim had a luncheon with the event participants, including the four graduate students selected as winners of the award. Chairman Kang promised his continued support for the University, including sending his employees to the temporarily named Department of Industrial Convergence & Engineering (a special programe for corporate employees), which is to be launched next year. Dean Joong Soon Jang of the Graduate School, who hosted the event, said, "I expect that these Awards will provide meaningful encouragement for graduate students who are growing as next-generation talents for the country," adding, "I would like to express my appreciation to Chairman Kang."

Ajou's Academic Affairs Team is selected as the Department of the Month 2016-03-14 The Academic Affairs Team of Ajou University was selected as the Department of the Month and the event to encourage the team members was held on March 14th in the President's Office. The Academic Affairs Team successfully organized the graduation and entrance ceremonies in February, smoothly carried out various academic affairs for the spring semester, and is working to establish Paran Semester, a newly introduced program. President Dong Yeon Kim said, "I praise your efforts toward successfully concluding major academic events when you were busy doing regular jobs," adding, "I ask you to take an active attitude in work and suggest fresh ideas." Ajou's Center for New Industries and Convergence Technologies signs an agreement with Eon Reality on cooperation regarding virtual reality 2016-03-14 On the morning of March 10th, the Center for New Industries and Convergence Technologies (Director Joo Yeoun Lee) under Ajou University signed an agreement with Eon Reality, a global leader in futuristic virtual reality (VR), at the University campus. Under the agreement, the Center plans to cooperate with Eon Reality on joint research and development, education, and establishing the Interactive Digital Center in South Korea by utilizing the world-class experience-oriented VR technology owned by Eon Reality. The agreement signing ceremony was attended by Professor Joo Yeoun Lee (Director of the Center), Professor Gi Nam Wang, Professor Suk Won Lee, Professor Jae Il Park, and Professor Myung Chul Jung from the University, and Chairman Dan Lejerskar, Vice President for the Asia Pacific region Pontus Appelqvist, and Korea Office CEO Yong Chae Kim from Eon Reality.
