Ajou's four groups and three teams are selected in the interim evaluation of the BK21+ Project [2016.05.03] Four groups and three teams from Ajou University were selected in the interim evaluation of the BK21+ Project and are set to receive 4.03 billion won per year until 2020. The BK21+ Project is an initiative in which the government provides financial support for research spending, etc. to those in master's and doctoral courses so that the next-generation academic talents can concentrate on their studies and research. It was first launched in 2013 and will be carried out in two phases until 2020. In the interim performance assessment, top 50 percent of the previously chosen groups and teams were selected again and the rest were chosen in a competition between the remaining 50 percent of previous players and new applicants. In the assessment, one hundred twenty-seven new groups and teams were chosen, which means that 23.3 percent of the existing ones were replaced. Four project groups were selected from the University, including the Molecular Science Technology Group (leader: Bun Yeoul Lee), the Convergence-based Futuristic Energy System Group (leader: Gi Hong Kim), the Bio Science Project Group (leader: Byung Gon Kim), and the Digital Therapy Convergence Talents Fostering Group (leader: Gyu Hwan Oh) and three project teams were chosen, including the Creative Talents Fostering Team for Autonomic Network Software for Smart Collaboration among Different Devices (leader: Yeong Bae Go), the Technological Talents Fostering Team for Improving Electronic System Reliability (leader: Kyo Beum Lee), and the Reliable Mobile Software Talents Production Team (leader: Tae Seon Jeong). Applications for project groups should be submitted by individual departments of graduate schools, while project teams are based on research teams led by individual professors. The newly selected project group and team from Ajou are headed by Professor Byung Gon Kim (Department of Medical Sciences) and Professor Kyo Beum Lee (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering), respectively.

Ajou's Professor Sang Kyu Park discovers a new protein that controls breast cancer cells [2016.05.02] A research team led by Ajou University Professor Sang Kyu Park (pictured above, Department of Pharmacy) discovered a new protein – ZNF224 – that controls the growth and extinction of breast cancer cells. The discovery identified the relationship between the new protein and breast cancer cells and is expected to contribute to the treatment of breast cancer and the development of related medicines. The findings were published in the April issue of The Oncotarget, a renowned academic journal in the field of cancer, under the title of "ZNF224, Krüppel like zinc finger protein, induces cell growth and apoptosis-resistance by down-regulation of p21 and p53 via miR-663a." The research was conducted with the support of the General Researcher Support Project, which is carried out by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer under the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the world. In 2002, it also surpassed stomach cancer to become the leading cancer for South Korean women. Cancer is caused by a combination of various environmental factors and genetic variations. ZNF224, which was discovered by Professor Park's team, is a new transcription factor that controls the expression of p53 and p21 within breast cancer cells. Transcription factor refers to the protein that controls expression or suppression of certain genes by combining with their DNA. P53 and p21 are known to be deeply involved in cancer incidence as the proteins control the cycle and extinction of cells. Professor Park's team confirmed that ZNF224 suppresses the expression of p53 and p21 by promoting the expression of miR-663a, a kind of microRNA that controls other genes within cells. The team also found that cell strains of breast cancer where ZNF224 is overly expressed showed resistance to CPT, a kind of anti-cancer medicine. The research of ZNF224 had previously focused on phenomenological models, and Professor Park's findings are the first to identify the relationship between ZNF224 and the proliferation of breast cancer cells through a cellular-level analysis. Thus, ZNF224 and miR-663a are expected to be used in developing bio markers for breast cancer diagnosis and targets for the treatment of the cancer. Professor Park said, "We found out that ZNF224 and miR-663a were indeed over-expressed in the tissues of breast cancer patients than those of others," adding, "This confirms that ZNF224 promotes the growth of cancer cells and resistance to their extinction as a transcription factor." He went on to say, "The results show that ZNF224 is very likely to become a target in developing breast cancer medicines," adding, "I expect that our finding will provide new possibilities of curing breast cancer by suppressing ZNF224 or its target genes." < Pictured above, Professor Sang Kyu Park’s team confirmed overly expressed ZNF224 and miR-663a in the tissues of breast cancer patients. >

Chairman Byeong Hee Kim from Heesung & H donated 100 million won to Ajou’s Pleasant Innovation Fund as an expression of his acknowledgement of the University's project missions. On April 28th, President Dong Yeon Kim presented a plaque of appreciation and a gift to Chairman Kim in Ajou's Yulgok Hall during the ceremony to mark his donation. Heesung & H specializes in making and distributing cosmetics and not only sells products in the Korean market, but exports to China and Southeast Asia. In his greetings, Chairman Kim said, “President Kim and I attended the same commercial high school under difficult financial conditions and both of us have succeeded through our own efforts. I am donating to the Pleasant Innovation projects because I acknowledge and support their missions. I understand that they were initiated by President Kim when he began to lead Ajou after leaving the civil service. I hope that my donation will create opportunities for dreams and hopes for students at the University. I will continue to follow the University’s activities and be happy to provide necessary support in the future." The 'Ajou University Fund for Pleasant Innovation' is a kind of development fund that was established after President Kim proposed 'Pleasant Innovation' as he took office. The Fund is used for projects that are in line with Ajou's values - challenge-taking, consideration of others, and creating win-win practices. The Pleasant Innovation projects currently include the After You Program, Paran Semester, Ajou SOS Program for Hope, and the Global Internship Program, etc. President Kim said, "I hope that the Pleasant Innovation programs will go beyond Ajou's boundaries and bring meaningful changes to universities across South Korea. In this sense, it is even more significant that Chairman Kim recognized the missions of our projects without any previous relationship with the University." After the ceremony, Chairman Kim and President Kim attended the 17th Ajou Brown Bag Meeting and talked with students in a casual setting. CEO Hyun Bae Kim from Bekei Korea, a subsidiary of Heesung & H, also joined the event. The donation is the first case in which President Kim worked together with the External Relations Team under the Office of the President to attract financial contributions, and it is expected to lead to even more vigorous campaigns in the future.

The lecture was held on the afternoon of April 21st in the University's Video Conference Room with about 100 students, professors, and staff members in attendance from the University. It aimed at enhancing awareness of and interest in unification among the participants. In his lecture, former Minister Ryu said, "Unification should be seen from the perspective of 'the process' rather than 'the results,'" adding, "It is a way for Koreans to restore our national pride and prosper in the geopolitical environment surrounded by global powers." He went on to say, "One of the fundamental requirements in creating a unification-friendly environment is that South Korea should become a healthy and attractive society," adding, "'Sense of unity' is more important than 'intellectual understanding' regarding unification, which is why educating our children and young people is most essential and urgent."
