Suwon Drone Festival ends in success [16.06.27] The 2016 Suwon Drone Festival, which is co-hosted by Ajou University and the Suwon Municipal Government, was held on June 25th and 26th in the playground and the indoor gymnasium at the University. Suwon City said that about 35,000 people participated in the event. The second annual festival featured a variety of programs that helped citizens become familiar with drones. On the playground, there was a formation flight of drones, a flight of racing drones, and showcases of the utility of drones, including observation, target hitting, precision landing, and crop-dusting. In addition, a number of industrial, academic, research, and public institutions set up booths displaying various drones and related parts. Events that were held in the indoor gymnasium included a mini drone racing contest, a drone dancing show, a drone fighter class, a screening of award-winning works from a drone-related film festival, and a display of award-winning works from a drone-related idea contest. In particular, the Business Section was arranged to promote drone-related industries, attracting investments, and explaining new technologies. It was an opportunity for consulting, marketing, and overseas exports for domestic drone businesses, with members of the World OKTA participating. From the University, professors demonstrated various activities related to their research at the event, which was organized by the LINC Project Group, including the Ground Control Station for multiple unmanned drones (Professor Yong Jin Kwon, Department of Industrial Engineering), a tactical data link simulator for national defense and auto flight and photography by drones (Professor Ho Ki Baek, Department of Defense and Digital Convergence), displaying vertical takeoff and landing drones with fixed wings and their application algorithm (Professor Jai Hoon Kim, Department of Cyber Security), and building drones with 3D printers (Professor Jeong Han Ko, Department of Industrial Engineering). Also, there was a booth introducing the University's Paran Semester. The Research Society for Drone Industry Policy held a seminar on the development of drone industries under the title "The Present and Future of Drones." At the opening ceremony on June 25th, Suwon City Mayor Tae Young Yeom said, "Suwon City is looking to become a leader in the drone industry based on its excellent infrastructure," adding, "I am confident of that, because we have drone-related businesses and can access the outstanding talent pools from outstanding educational institutions in this city, including Ajou." President Dong Yeon Kim said, "The drone industry is already growing fast with related start-ups and becoming an important core industry for future growth," adding, "I hope that Ajou University will contribute to the development of drone industries by promoting creative and innovative ideas among students through the Paran Semester, and will partner with local governments and drone industries." Director of the LINC Project Group and Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi said, "The drone industry is continuing development for commercial, public, and private purposes and, in particular, the potential for commercial uses is tremendous since there are no limitations in scope and applications. From now on, the key to market success is who can utilize drones in what ways. If we can succeed, it will greatly help in job creation," adding, "In that sense, this event is quite significant because the local government, related industries, and the University have come together for the development of the drone industry."

Former Premier Hong Won Jung gives a special lecture to Ajou's “AFTER YOU” Program participants [16.06.24] Former Prime Minister Hong Won Jung gave a special lecture to the participants of Ajou University's “AFTER YOU” Program. The one-and-a-half-hour lecture, which was held on the afternoon of June 23rd in Room 105 in the College Academic Building, was attended by students and staff members who are participating in the “AFTER YOU” Program this summer. Former Premier Jung discussed his own career and experiences as a government official with the students and passed on encouraging messages and support for them. He said, "You can easily find mentors around you who will give you lessons," adding, "I recommend that you try to watch, listen to, and learn from them, and these experiences will be integrated into your own character, speech, and acts over time." He went on to say, "I hope that you respect and have consideration for the people around you and stay humble at all times." Former Premier Jung passed the Korean Bar Exam in 1972 and worked as Director of the Gwangju Regional Prosecutors' Office and Director of the Busan Regional Prosecutors' Office. He then served as the 42nd Prime Minister for two years from February 2013 and worked together with Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim, who served as Minister for Government Policy Coordination at the time. Former Premier Jung attended President Kim's inaugural ceremony in February last year, marking the first time an incumbent Prime Minister participated in the inauguration of a president of a private university since the South Korean government was established. A total of 121 students from Ajou and neighboring universities will participate in the “AFTER YOU” Program this summer. They will attend language courses and have cultural experiences, etc., over four weeks at the University of Michigan, Johns Hopkins University, and Washington University in the U.S., and Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Beijing Institute of Technology in China. Before the Program begins, lectures by invited renowned people and English and Chinese language classes were arranged for the participants.

Ajou signs an agreement on nurturing talents with Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit [16.06.23] On the morning of June 22nd, Ajou University and Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit (SMRT) entered into an agreement on fostering professional talents in the railway sector and industry-academia cooperation at the University's Yulgok Hall. The agreement signing ceremony was attended by President Dong Yeon Kim and Dean Choul Ki Lee of the Graduate School of Intelligent Transport Systems from the University and CEO Tae Ho Kim, Director Byeong Seon Kim of the Training Institute,and other officials from SMRT. The event began with PR videos of the two institutions, followed by greetings from CEO Kim and President Kim, and the signing of the agreement. In his greetings, CEO Kim said, "SMRT is the tenth-largest transit operator in the world and has a combined 125 kilometers of railways and 6,500 employees. We make continuous efforts to improve the quality of our services through nurturing our human resources. I expect that this agreement will be of great help in that regard." President Kim said, "I know that SMRT is striving to harmonize public services and profitability. Ajou will provide full support to help SMRT foster excellent talents, not only through the Graduate School of Intelligent Transport Systems, but University-wide."

Ajou signs an agreement with the Korea Testing Laboratory [16.06.22] Ajou University signed an agreement on improving industrial technological expertise and innovative capabilities with the Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL). Under the agreement, the two institutions will work together for software testing certification and related R&D activities. During the agreement signing ceremony, which was held on the afternoon of June 22nd in the University's Yulgok Hall, Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim and Director Won Bok Lee of KTL signed and exchanged the agreement. The event was also attended by Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, Vice President for Planning Jung Seob Lee, Dean Jung Yol Jo of the College of Information Technology, Dean Hye Sun Kim of the College of Natural Sciences, and Project Support Team Leader Cheol Kyun Park from the University. Ajou and KTL agreed to join forces for testing certification for improving the quality of software products; conducting research and development for establishing a software certification system including software validation; sharing equipment and facilities; exchanging R&D staff; and organizing related international conferences, seminars, and other academic events, etc. At the ceremony, President Kim said, "I expect that this agreement will bring together our two institutions for a substantial and close partnership." KTL was established to help enhance South Korea's industrial competitiveness through technological support for product testing and evaluation, and it is responsible for the certification of product performance and reliability and research and market analysis regarding product testing, evaluation, and certification.

ROK Air Force Chief of Staff meets with students from Ajou's Department of Defense and Digital Convergence [16.06.14] Republic of Korea (ROK) Air Force Chief of Staff Kyeong Doo Jeong visited Ajou University to encourage students in the Department of Defense and Digital Convergence. The Department was launched last year under the related agreement between the University and the ROK Air Force. Upon arriving at the University on the morning of June 14th, Chief of Staff Jeong and other officials met with Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim in the President's Office. Also in attendance at the meeting were Director Gwang Soo Lee of the Division of Information and Planning, Chief Secretary Ok Cheol Shin, and Head of the Education Policies Section Jeong Hyeon Choi, Head of Command and Management Section Yeong Chae Kim, and Head of Protocol Section Yong Gu Hwang from the Air Force. Executive Vice President Kyung Hee Choi, Dean Jung Yol Jo of the College of Information Technology, Professor Tae Yeong Kim (former Defense Minister), and Director Jae Sung Lim of the Department of Defense and Digital Convergence joined them from the University. The meeting was followed by a presentation on the operation of the Department of Defense and Digital Convergence by Director Lim. Students who enter the Department receive a full scholarship from the ROK Air Force for the four years they attend the University. In exchange for the scholarship, after graduation the graduates are required to serve as officers in the ROK Air Force for seven years. After that period, they are able to choose between remaining in the military, moving to defense businesses or defense related research institutes, etc. Chief of Staff Jeong then met thirty-nine students – freshmen and sophomores – from the Department and discussed life in and the future of the ROK Air Force. At the end of the event, he shook hands with each and every student and distributed books as gifts. Chief of Staff Jeong said, "I trust the expertise and experience of Ajou's faculty members," adding, "I expect that the students at the Department of Defense and Digital Convergence continuously develop their talents and join the Air Force after graduation."

Ajou's first Paran Semester concludes with presentations of individual teams' achievements [16.06.09] Presentations of individual teams' achievements in the first 'Paran Semester – Ajou Creative Activity Program' were held on the afternoon of June 9th in Dasan Hall to encourage the participating students. The event was attended by the students participating in the Program, professors, and staff members not only from Ajou, but from other universities as well. Also in attendance were officials from OB Brewery, a partner company of the Program. In the preliminary event, the achievements of the participating students were displayed on the ground floor of Dasan Hall. The main event kicked off with a performance by media art team Bitsam, followed by presentations by the fourteen participating teams on their respective tasks, a video presentation on the progress of the Program to date, words of encouragement by an official from the partner company, encouraging remarks by President Dong Yeon Kim, and an awards presentation. Professor Chul Hwan Joo (Department of Culture and Contents) served as the MC. President Kim said, "There are two main reasons why Ajou launched the Paran Semester," adding, "First, it aims to help you find what you really want to do. And I also hope that you feel happy in the moment while doing your tasks." He went on to say, "I am proud of the progress that you have achieved in your tasks and thank the professors for your participation and support," adding, "The University will continue to strive to assist students to find their own solutions instead of the right answers imposed by others." The awards that were presented were the Pioneer Award, the Innovator Award, the Pilot Award, the Turning Point Award, the Star of Tomorrow Award, the Excellence Award, the Golden Failure Award, and the Great Sailor Award. All the award-winning teams received prize money and additional prizes. Forty-two teams of 120 students participated in the first Paran Semester and took on their respective challenges. Guiding professors and experts from outside the University served as advisors to the students and the University checked their progress through interim and final reports submitted by the students. Students should design programs on their own to apply for the Paran Semester and receive 3-18 regular credits if the tasks are successfully completed. There is no limitation of the areas in which students may design their tasks, i.e., the humanities, culture and arts, community services, globalization, and industry-academia cooperation. It is also possible to choose or revise programs from among those suggested by the University or professors. The tasks that are being carried out include making a 3D street view map of Ajou University, designing and building 600cc racing cars, providing psychology consultations to the disabled through sign language, designing and building drones, making and submitting short films to international film festivals, making and releasing small-scale independent games, and developing a transaction platform for used books. In addition, the University is planning the Global Internship Program in connection with the Paran Semester during the summer vacation. Participants can have firsthand experiences of businesses and corporate culture at selected global companies and receive regular credits as part of the Paran Semester. The partners include about 20 companies, including global carmaker BMW, CKP – one of the largest Asian accounting firms in the U.S., and 20 members of the World-OKTA based in 10 countries. Ajou signs an agreement on job creation with three partners including Gwangmyeong City [16.06.09] Ajou University signed an agreement with Gwangmyeong Municipal Government, the Gyeonggi Employers Federation (Human Resources Development Committee of Gyeonggi Province), and the Korea Industry Convergence Association (KICA). Under the agreement, the four parties will join hands to foster talents and create jobs that can meet the demands of local industries. The agreement signing ceremony was held on June 3rd at Gwangmyeong City Hall, with Ajou's Dean of Graduate School Joong Soon Jang (Director of the Corporate Support Center), Gwangmyeong City Mayor Ki Dae Yang, Managing Director Jin Woo Kim from the Gyeonggi Employers Federation, Director Hyeong Cheol Kim from KICA, and other relevant officials in attendance. The agreement aims to contribute to local industrial development and job creation by efficiently nurturing talents in line with industrial needs in Gyeonggi Province through close collaboration among the four organizations. Ajou University is set to partner with KICA to operate an expanded talent nurturing program in Gwangmyeong and create more opportunities for industry-academia cooperation through a stable network among industries, academia, and the related government agencies. Dean Joong Soon Jang said, "This agreement with Gwangmyeong City will serve as an opportunity to take the cooperation among industries, academia, and government agencies to a higher level." Ajou University was previously selected as an operator of the joint training center for the "Talent Fostering Project Tailored to Provincial and Industrial Needs," which is being carried out by the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the Human Resources Development Service, and the Human Resources Development Committee of Gyeonggi Province.

Ajou holds a mentoring day for the “2016 Summer AFTER YOU” Program [16.06.03] A mentoring program for students participating in the “AFTER YOU Program – 2016 Summer Ajou Global Campus” was held on the afternoon of June 3rd in Ajou University’s Seongho Hall Theater. President Dong Yeon Kim and members of ‘Cheong Ya,’ a society of people who pioneered their future on their own by attending night high schools or colleges because of financial difficulties, joined the event as mentors and gave words of encouragement and support to the students. A total of about 160 people attended the event, including 120 students from Ajou and neighboring universities participating in the Program, 10 mentors, and professors and staff members. It kicked off with an introduction of the mentors by President Kim, followed by presentations by participating students, presentations by mentors, and a talk show with the mentors. In attendance as mentors were President Kim, Chairman Jong Kyoo Yoon from KB Financial Group, CEO Dong Heon Kang from Komelon, Chairman Kye Shin Park from Diatech Korea, Advisor Shi Hyeong Park from Sam & Parkers, Professor Kwang Jin Jeon from Sungkyunkwan University, CEO Sung Il Cho from NSK Korea, and Lawyer Jeok Hwa Hwang from the law firm Yoon & Yang. They discussed their own experiences and gave advice to students from the stage. In addition, CEO Duck Young Moon of AJ and CEO Sam Gu Lee of Hae Dong Industrial Systems, who recognize the Program objectives, also joined the event to support the students. President Kim said, “Challenge-taking, consideration for others, and win-win practices are some of the values pursued by Ajou and integrated in the After You Program that you are participating in,” adding, “I ask that students from Ajou and other universities be considerate of and understand one another and build friendship.” After the main event, students and mentors had a beer party in the square in front of Seongho Hall and continued their conversations in a more casual setting. Chairman Hong Kuk Kim of Harim Group, a member of Cheong Ya, encouraged students by providing chicken and beer for the party, though he was unable to attend due to health issues. The AFTER YOU Program – Ajou Global Campus was launched by the University for students who find it hard to develop overseas experience because of financial difficulties. The third group of participants has been selected for the Program this summer, which is larger than those last summer and winter. A total of 121 students will be sent to the University of Michigan, Johns Hopkins University, and Washington University in the U.S. and Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Beijing Institute of Technology in China. Twenty students from Ajou's neighboring universities are among the participants in the Program. “AFTER YOU Program” selects participants based on the dreams and determination of individual applicants and does not consider their English proficiency and GPA. All the funds necessary for the Program are raised from outside contributions. Sixty Ajou people from the Graduate School of Public Affairs, etc. participate in the 'Suwon Citizens Forest Project' in Mongolia [16.06.01] President Dong Yeon Kim and people from the Graduate School of Public Affairs of Ajou University participated in the 'Suwon Citizens Forest Project,' which was held on May 28th in Mongolia. The Project, which began in 2011 under the initiative of the Suwon Municipal Government, aims to plant 100,000 trees over ten years – 10,000 per year – in Erdene Soum, 40km away from Ulan Bator, Mongolia. This year, it was held from May 26th to the 30th, with about 140 people participating. About eighty people from Suwon City were sent for the Project, including Chairman Jung Han Choi of the Human Mongolia Association, members of the Suwon City Council, and other city officials with approximately 60 Ajou people joining them. The Graduate School of Public Affairs, which first participated in the Project last year, formed a large delegation this year to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Dean Heung Sik Kim, professors, and alumni of the Graduate School of Public Affairs, and Dean Seung Ik Yoo, professors, and undergraduate students from the College of Social Sciences were included in the mission. In his remarks, President Dong Yeon Kim said, "Ajou University is actively participating in the programs through which it can contribute to Suwon City and the local community. There is a maxim, 'You should plant trees for the next ten years and nurture talents for the next ten decades.' I believe that this project fits both of these goals because it has brought together young people from Korea and Mongolia," adding, "I hope that our students can gain a variety of experiences through community services, international programs, and other challenge-taking activities." President Kim also suggested that he and the students participating in the event see the musical "The Wash," which features the life of a Mongolian young man named Solongo in Korea. President Kim promised to arrange an opportunity to see it together soon.

[President Dong Yeon Kim gives a special lecture to about 100 students, professors, and staff members at the request of Uzbekistan's UWED.] [President Kim exchanges an MOU with President Djumanov Abdumalik Abduvakhabovich of UWED.] Ajou's President Kim builds relationships with different institutions during his trip to Mongolia [16.06.01 ] Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim visited Uzbekistan and Mongolia for eight days from May 22nd to the 29th. He signed partnerships with prominent local universities and discussed cooperation with local government officials and business leaders. On May 23rd, President Kim visited the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and signed an MOU with President Djumanov Abdumalik Abduvakhabovich on bilateral cooperation between the two universities, including education and research activities. The two sides discussed a dual degree program, student and professor exchanges, and attracting excellent students to graduate schools and agreed to work on details soon. UWED is a top-class national university established in 1992 under the Uzbekistani Foreign Ministry and specializes in global economics, international relations, foreign policy, and international law and journalism. At the request of UWED, President Kim gave a lecture for about 40 minutes prior to the MOU signing ceremony. Under the theme 'Joyful Uprising,' he introduced the unique programs that Ajou University is carrying out, including the After You Program and the Paran Semester. At UWED, students dressed in Hanbok – Korea's traditional clothing – greeted Ajou's delegation, and two students – a male and a female – introduced their university in Korean. In addition, they sincerely welcomed President Kim and other delegates by serving palov, a traditional food Uzbeks prepare for distinguished guests. President Kim then had a luncheon with Minister Aziz Abdukhakimov, the Advisor for External Affairs from the Ministry of Labor, and Uzbek Representative Jeong Hoon Cho from the World Bank to discuss bilateral exchanges. They talked about student exchanges and career opportunities for Ajou's students in Uzbekistan, for which Minister Aziz Abdukhakimov promised full support. When he heard that the President of Indonesia visited Ajou for a talk concert, Minister Aziz Abdukhakimov jokingly commented, "I will arrange a visit for the Uzbek President to Ajou if the number of our students at the University reaches a certain level." President Kim also met with the members of the OKTA Uzbek Office and about 40 businesspeople who worked at the former Daewoo Group and had tea with South Korean Ambassador to Uzbekistan Wook Heon Lee. During the meetings, President Kim introduced Ajou's unique programs and the participants promised to help the University’s students enter Uzbekistan and other countries within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) for research, employment, and internships, etc. On the 27th, the Ajou delegation concluded MOUs with Ulaanbaatar University and the National University of Mongolia. Ulaanbaatar University, which was established by a Christian missionary from South Korea, began with the Department of Korean Language and has become a leading private university. After signing the MOU, President Kim and President Deok Gyo Oh from Ulaanbaatar University gave words of encouragement to students from Ajou and Ulaanbaatar. The Ajou students visited Mongolia for the 'Suwon Citizens Forest Project' and were discussing 'desertification in Mongolia and ways to prevent it' with their Ulaanbaatar counterparts. Later that day, President Kim visited the National University of Mongolia (NUM), which was established in 1942 and is the most prestigious university in the country. President Kim and NUM President Regsuren Baterdene signed an MOU and discussed a dual degree program and student exchanges, etc. They agreed to strive to turn the MOUs into practical and substantial results, considering that they are the first Ajou has concluded with Mongolian universities.
