Ajou receives good results in two recent university evaluations[16.10.19]Ajou University received good results in two recent university evaluationsIn the 2016 University Evaluation released on October 17th by The Joongang Ilbo, Ajou University climbed three notches from last year to take the 13th place along with the University of Seoul. Ajou received a total of 172 points, which is 9 points higher than the one ranked 15th. The University had only 5 and 9 points lower than the 10th and 7th places, respectively, indicating that it may take the 10th or higher spot in next evaluations.The evaluation looked at 69 four-year universities in South Korea. The total score is 300 based on 33 indexes in 4 categories (100 points for educational environment, 100 for research activities of faculty, 70 for student education and achievements, and 30 for reputation). Ajou ranked 21st in educational environment, up six notches, and took the 7th and 11th places in student education and achievements and reputation, up eleven and five spots from the previous year, respectively. The ranking in research activities of faculty fell 4 places.As for other indexes, the University ranked 6th in the diversity of international students, and 9th in both investment in book purchases per student and willingness of recommendation. The ratio of students participating in on-site experiments and business start-up education jumped to 11th and 9th places from 59th and 52nd each from a year earlier.Earlier in September, Ajou took the 22nd place in the 'Asia's Most Innovative Universities' ranking released by Reuters, which was the 9th place among South Korean universities. The ranking is based on Reuters evaluation of 75 Asian universities in terms of academic papers and patent filings, etc.

Ajou presents certificates of the Lee Jong Cheol Scholarship to students[16.10.19]A ceremony to present the fourth certificates of the Lee Jong Cheol Scholarship was held on the morning of October 19th in Ajou University's Yulgok Hall. Eleven students received a total of 20 million won in scholarship funds.CEO Jong Cheol Lee of Dong Seong Metal, who is also a graduate from the 43rd Advanced Management Program under the University’s Graduate School of Business Administration, presented scholarship certificates to the students. He contributed a total of 300 million won in scholarship funds to the University, which is being granted in the name of the Lee Jong Cheol Scholarship every semester.This semester, eleven students from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, the Department of Medical Sciences, the Department of Nursing Sciences, and the Department of Pharmacy received 1 to 2.5 million won per person.The event was attended by Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, Dean Ilo Jou of the School of Medicine, Dean Moon Sook Yoo of the College of Nursing, Dean Sang Duk Lee of the College of Engineering, Dean Beom Jin Lee of the College of Pharmacy, Vice President for Student Affairs Jai Hyoung Cho, and Vice President for Planning Jung Seob Lee from the University as well as CEO Lee and the scholarship recipients.Mr. Lee said to the students, "I ask that you live challenge-taking lives based on your excellent abilities," adding, "I also hope that you will be able to feel the 'joy of sharing' in the future yourselves, through donations."The students who received scholarship funds read letters of appreciation and delivered a flower bouquet to Mr. Lee. Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Choi expressed his appreciation to Mr. Lee on behalf of Ajou people.

Ajou's student team SWAG wins award at Capstone Design Fair[16.10.18]Team SWAG, consisting of Ajou University students (Department of Mechanical Engineering, guiding professor Jung Il Lee), won the Grand Prize (Minister of Science, ICT & Future Planning Prize) at the ICT Idea Contest & Capstone Design Fair in the 13th Suwon Information & Science Festival. The festival, hosted by Suwon City and the Suwon Office of Education, was held from October 14th to the 15th at the Suwon Sports Complex. Its programs included the Drone Building Contest, the Intelligent Robot Competition, and the Information Olympiad.Ajou's award-winning team, including Kwang Hyeon Kim, Ho Jun Lee, Yeong Chun Lim, and Shin Pyo Kim, designed a pump-operated sap injector with the support of the LINC Project Group.Capstone Design is a comprehensive design education program in which students develop their abilities to address issues that they can face in industrial sites through planning, designing, and building works. Students from universities where Capstone Design is available participated in the competition.During the festival, Ajou University set up a booth to promote the Software Specialized University Project along with the LINC Project Group. Accreditation of Ajou’s engineering education is extended to 2020[16.10.14]Nine programs offered by the College of Engineering and the College of Information Technology under Ajou University received accreditation, effective through February 2020, from the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK). The accreditation is the result of the mid-term evaluation by ABEEK that is required within three years from the regular accreditation that was conducted in 2013.Those that were accredited are six programs available in the College of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil System Engineering, and Architectural Engineering), and three programs available in the College of Information Technology (Electrical and Computer Engineering, Information and Computer Engineering, and Software Convergence Technology). The certification guarantees the quality of engineering education through the evaluation of eight categories, including educational objectives, the assessment of achievements in learning, curriculum, students, faculty, the educational environment, and educational improvement. Students who graduate from the accredited programs are recognized as international engineering experts and their academic abilities are considered at the same level as local university graduates in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, etc. In addition, the graduates are eligible to take the Professional Engineer Test.Director Sang Duk Lee from the Engineering Education Innovation Center under the University said, “I believe that the accreditation of Ajou's engineering education has been established since the University has continually been certified since 2005. From this point, we will strive to gain the advanced, customized, and global standard certification of Ajou’s engineering education by further developing design-related education, instead of simply settling for resting on our achievements so far."

Ajou’s President Dong Yeon Kim gives a keynote speech at a symposium hosted by the Gyeonggi Institute of Education (GIE)[16.10.13]Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim gave a keynote speech at a symposium entitled “Issues and Solutions of Korea's Education amid the Fourth Industrial Revolution”, which was held on October 13th in the Grand Auditorium of the Gyeonggi Institute of Education (GIE).The event was held to celebrate the third anniversary of GIE's opening and it was attended by about 300 people, including education policymakers, researchers, teachers, and parents.President Kim gave a keynote speech at the event under the title ‘Education and Game-changing Revolution in Korea’ after congratulatory speeches by Superintendent Jae Jung Lee of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education and Chairman Ki Youl Jung of the Gyeonggi-do Assembly. President Kim was recommended as a speaker by Superintendent Lee.President Kim mentioned the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the outrage of a majority of the people as two key issues in our society, emphasizing that education should focus on fostering talents who can find ‘their own answers’ instead of ‘the right answers’ imposed on them.He added, “We should address structural social contradictions, including the broken ladder of social mobility.” He also introduced projects that Ajou is carrying out to help deal with the structural problems. They include the Paran Semester – Ajou's Creative Activity Semester in which students can choose activities they want to do and receive credits based on the results, and the After You Program where the University selects students having financial difficulties and sends them to overseas partner universities on full scholarships.President Kim’s lecture was followed by speeches entitled ‘Philosophical Foundation of Future Education in Korea – Diagnosis, Challenges, and Directions’ by Researcher Ki Soo Kim of the Korean Educational Development Institute, ‘Innovation of Educational System for Future Generations’ by Assistant Researcher Hye Jeong Lee of GIE, and ‘Finding Futuristic Schools in Korea's Current Education’ by Director Seul Gi Jang of the Research Institute for Educational Programs Design.

Ajou presents a plaque of appreciation to CEO Sam Gu Lee for his donation to the ‘Ajou Game-changing Revolution Fund’[16.10.13]A ceremony to present a plaque of appreciation to CEO Sam Gu Lee of Haedong Industrial Systems for his donation to Ajou University was held on October 13th in Yulgok Hall’s Office of the President.The ‘Ajou Game-changing Revolution Fund,’ to which CEO Lee donated, is being used for the University’s major programs, including the After You Program and the Paran Semester.The ceremony was attended by President Dong Yeon Kim, Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, Dean Yung Ho Cho of the Graduate School of Business Administration, Director Ho Hwan Park of the School of Business Administration, Vice President for Planning Jung Seob Lee, Vice President for Student Affairs Jai Hyoung Cho, and Chairman Hyeong Gyun Kim of the Akyung Scholarship Foundation as well as CEO Lee.President Kim expressed his appreciation to CEO Lee on behalf of Ajou people.As an alumnus of the Graduate School of Business Administration under the University, CEO Lee is serving as Chairman of the Supporters Society for the Ajou University Soccer Team. He has steadily made donations for the University’s students.

Ajou presents plaques of appreciation to Professor Seung Joon Lee and alumnus CEO Seong Woo Kim for their donations[16.10.12]On the afternoon of October 12th, a ceremony for presenting plaques of appreciation to Emeritus Professor Seung Joon Lee (Department of Architecture) and alumnus CEO Seong Woo Kim (Department of Physics, entrance class of 1986) was held in Yulgok Hall's Office of the President for their donations to Ajou University. Professor Lee and alumnus Kim contributed 10 million won, respectively.The ceremony was attended by President Dong Yeon Kim, Vice President for Planning Jung Seob Lee, Vice President for Student Affairs Jai Hyoung Cho, Director Kyu In Lee of the Department of Architecture, Director Dong Il Yeom of the Department of Physics, and Professor Doo Jin Cho (Department of Physics) from the University.Emeritus Professor Lee, who retired in August after teaching at the University since 1988, promised to make the contribution for the development of the Department of Architecture.CEO Kim of One Stone made the donation for scholarship funds, which will be presented to students under the title of the One Stone Scholarship. He had also donated 10 million won last August. Ajou University participated in the 21st World-OKTA Convention held from October 4th to the 7th in Jeongseon, Gangwon-do, and achieved fruitful results in expanding opportunities for global exchanges.On the afternoon of October 4th at the World-OKTA CEO Meeting, the University LINC Project Team presented on its business support programs to the World-OKTA leadership and branch heads from around the world. Team Leader Goon Jin Lim introduced the University and its partner companies and explained the corporate assistance program in connection with internships, the global internship program, and the commercialization of on-campus assets, etc. Lim said, "I expect that the presentation will be an opportunity for Ajou's partner companies to go global and for the University to expand its support for overseas companies."Ajou's eight partner companies participated in the Export Products Exhibition held for three days from October 4th. The participants include those from the University Incubation Center and those started by students. They met with a total of 260 potential customers and discussed or signed export deals, which is expected to help them further penetrate overseas markets.On October 5th, Jeong Hun Cho (senior, Department of Chemical Engineering) participated in the '2016 Investment Fair for Rising Stars' with his sound speaker 'Happy New Ear' and attracted 40,000 dollars of investment. Cho is a successful case of Ajou's business incubation and global internship program. As a member of the on-campus business start-up club, he worked as an intern at KOTRA and joined the Next Generation Global Start-up & Trade School in August.In addition, Ajou's representatives conducted activities for the World-OKTA Global Internship and industry-academia cooperation. On October 6th, President Dong Yeon Kim met with CEO Sae Bong Myoung from Terranova based in Paraguay and CEO Gwi Sun Choi from Samma International based in Hungary and expressed his appreciation for the company joining the global internship and discussed expanding the program. President Kim also hosted the 'Ajou Seminar for Global Industry-Academia Cooperation' by inviting about 180 businesspeople from the World-OKTA hubs, including China, Japan, ASEAN, and North America. He gave a lecture at the Seminar and discussed expanding global industry-academia cooperation with participants. In his lecture, President Kim introduced various challenges and efforts for global education and exchanges carried out by the University, which was well received by the participants. After the event, participants asked the University officials about the global internship and the corporate support program and applied for the Ajou Mentoring Program.< Ajou's eight partner companies participate in the Export Products Exhibition, which helped them further penetrate overseas markets.>

Ajou's soccer team wins the 2016 Incheon International Airport U-league Area 3[16.10.05]The Ajou University soccer team won the Area 3 championship in the 2016 Incheon International Airport U-league.On September 30th, the University soccer team sealed the championship by defeating Myongji University 2 to 1 in the last game of the season, held at Myongji. Ajou recorded 30 points (9 wins, 3 draws, and 2 losses), which is 2 points higher than Cheongju University. Until the last game, there was fierce competition over the local championship, because the area had traditionally strong teams, including Hongik University, Cheongju University, and Myongji University.In the U-League, 78 university teams play home and away games in 10 areas during the regular season, and the top three teams from each area advance to the playoff tournament to select the final champion. In the beginning of season, Ajou's goal was to take the third spot in the area considering the injuries of key players and the generational shift.Once the season started, however, the University proved to be well-organized and showed strong performances with six wins, one draw, and no losses at home. The Area Championship, which came three years after 2013, was thanks to the leadership of the coaches, including Head Coach Seok Joo Ha, and enthusiastic supporters including 1,200 people at the home opening game. Ajou’s soccer team front office, the first time among South Korean universities, also contributed with professional support in the game operation, promotion, and cheering.Head coach Ha said, "Our achievement is all because of the strong support from the University and our fans," adding, "I want to thank you all and we will continue to make our best efforts.”Ajou is playing in the U-League Playoff to be held from October 28th to November 11th in Pocheon City. A total of 32 teams will participate, including the area champions, and Ajou is scheduled to play in the round of thirty-two on October 28th.

Ajou holds a conference on artificial intelligence with Dr. Ben Goertzel[16.09.28]At 2 p.m. on September 28th, Ajou University's Center for New Industries and Convergence Technologies (Director Joo Yeoun Lee) held the '1st Global Conference on New Industries and Convergence Technologies' in Yulgok Hall's Grand Auditorium under the theme 'Changes That Artificial Intelligence (AI) Will Bring.'Dr. Ben Goertzel, a world-renowned AI expert who heads the OpenCog Foundation, gave a lecture at the Conference. He has served as a leader in the field by opening the source code of OpenCog – a platform for controlling AI robots – and sharing it with AI developers around the world.In his lecture, Dr. Goertzel said, "AI is expected to play a central role in most social areas and replace the majority of professions in ten years. Knowledge that is now being taught at universities may be useless by then. Nevertheless, we should continue to strive to build our learning abilities." After the lecture, Ajou's Center for New Industries and Convergence Technologies signed an MOU with Pangyo Global CTO Club (Chairman Se Tak Chang). The two sides plan to lead in establishing a collaboration system among industries, academia, and research institutes by connecting the Pangyo, Gwanggyo, and Dongtan areas and to serve as the hub and spokes of new industries and convergence technologies in our hyper-connected society.Professor Joo Yeoun Lee said, "Dr. Ben Goertzel is a prominent scholar who has pioneered AI projects," adding, "This conference will contribute to boosting research in new industries and convergence technologies."
